Muscular Dystrophies
According to the CDC, “Muscular dystrophies are a group of muscle diseases caused by mutations in a person’s genes.” Though there are several kinds of muscular dystrophy, each, according to Johns Hopkins Medical Center, involves “weakness and wasting away of muscle tissue.” With some muscular dystrophies, nerve tissue breaks down as well. Symptoms vary according to the type of muscular dystrophy, as does the age at which symptoms appear. Though the age of onset and specific symptoms of each type vary, all muscular dystrophies are characterized by a decrease in strength and physical ability. Types of muscular dystrophy include Duchenne and Becker, Emery-Dreifuss, Congenital, Distal, Facioscapulohumeral, Limb-Girdle, Oculopharyngeal, and Myotonic.
