Spinal Cord Injury

Along with the brain, the spinal cord plays a vital role in most of the body’s core functions. The spinal cord relays messages from the brain to the body, allowing it to carry out functions relating to movement, sensation, and to autonomic functions like digestion. If the spinal cord is damaged, the functions that the spinal cord carries out can be damaged as well. Often, if a person’s spinal cord is damaged, then that person experiences a loss or a slowing of functions in all three areas below the site of the injury. According to the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, “the higher in the spinal cord an injury occurs, the more function, sensation and internal body functions will be affected.” Symptoms of a spinal cord injury may include difficulty walking, the inability to feel heat or cold, or a loss of balance.
