Neuromuscular and Neurodevelopmental Conditions
According to Cedars Sinai, neuromuscular conditions “affect the nerves that control voluntary muscles and the nerves that communicate sensory information back to the brain.” These conditions often damage the nerve cells that serve as a communications channel between a person’s muscles and nervous system. When that communication is interrupted, it causes a person’s muscles to weaken. While some neuromuscular conditions are present at birth, others may appear in adulthood. Neuromuscular conditions include peripheral neuropathy, multiple sclerosis, and ALS.
Conditions that affect the way the brain develops and functions are called neurodevelopmental conditions. Generally, children show signs of these conditions when they’re very young. However, older children and teens show signs of some neurodevelopmental conditions, including schizophrenia. Other neurodevelopmental conditions include autism spectrum disorders as well as ADHD and speech and language disorders, like stuttering and receptive language disorder.
